The Sugarcane outgrowers of Mumias
Joseph travels to Western Province to talk to sugarcane farmers ('outgrowers') for the Mumias sugar company. Although the sugar plantation has provided some local benefits, the farmers are charged heavily for fertilizers, cane harvesting and transport and many live permanently in debt. Sugarcane takes 2 years to grow and sometimes is not harvested for even longer, leading to cash flow problems. Scarcity of food also means high food costs.
