Joseph's summary of Tana's sugar project

Joseph has come back from his travels in the Tana Delta and Western Province's sugar belt. He has four main conclusions:

1. The pastoralists of the Tana Delta will be severely affected by the sugar project.
2. Sugar farming in Western Province has not brought all the benefits the people hoped for and many sugar farmers struggle with poverty.
3. The Tana Delta is the only water source for miles around - sugar cane would significantly reduce water availability to many water users in the Delta.
4. Sugar production could be easily improved in Western Province - if sugar self-sufficiency is so important in Kenya, why hasn't this been done? Mumias Sugar, TARDA and NEMA all declined to comment.
