The case was heard at the Malindi High Court on 19th Feb. There was a strong push from the government to have the stay orders lifted, but they were upheld. The case will come to court again in April 2009.
The Kenya Wetlands forum addressed a press conference on 2nd March, to raise concerns about a new river chanel that the government has been digging. This is an attempt to restore water supply to more than 40,000 people left without water when the river changed course in August 2008. The KWF's concern is that the new channel is being dug without an EIA, local communities were not consulted and are being forcibly evicted, and a minority group called Malakote will be left in an island from where children will have to cross two rivers to go to school. The press conference received coverage from K24, Nation newspaper, The Nairobi Star and several radio stations.
